Self-evaluation is a difficult task, as is peer evaluation. Students are asked to look closely at all of the elements of an academic paragraph they wrote in response to a non-fiction opinion article they analyzed the week before. During this lesson, they are asked to--using the rubric--annotate and critique (and then grade) their peers paragraph. They discuss it in small groups of three and come to an agreement on what grade it earned on each element of the rubric. We then come together as a group and evaluate it together. For homework, they grade their own using the same process and revise just one more draft before turning in one more final to me for a grade.
