This convenient rhetorical device handout is for students to keep with them as they write. When I create a rubric for a writing assignment, I require students to use a number of these and to highlight them before submitting their final copy. For example, if they are writing a five-paragraph piece, I require at least three. I find this highlighting requirement helpful because it puts the burden on the student writer to identify and verify that he or she has used one of these techniques. My sense is that students will seldom incorporate these into their written work unless they are urged.
