PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In an attempt to bring some real-world connections to the rhetorical devices we were studying during the Age of Reason unit, I had my kids do this assignment. I presented the definitions of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to my kids. Once they had the definitions, I presented this power point to them and we verbally discussed in which category the ad or film clip belonged. The next step was to have them find an advertisement in a magazine (thank goodness our librarian keeps a lot of old ones around). They then analyzed the ads to see which rhetorical devices the companies were using to sell their products. It was really fun to discuss why, the companies chose which rhetorical devices and that transferred to the Age of Reason literature we studied as well. This was an activity I did to kick off the unit which then had us listening to 4 different speeches (2 from the Age of Reason, one from Jonathan Edwards, and one from President Bush). More on this assignment and my culminating essay assignment to come! : ) RUBRIC FOR ASSIGNMENT INCLUDED!
