Rhyme and Draw is a poem shared with the class and each rhyming phrase suggests what the children draw. It can be done by having the children work together to complete the rhyme drawing on the board whole group, while children participate. The teacher can also model the drawing steps, and each child can create their own drawings. The purpose of Rhyme and Draw activities is to provide phonemic awareness exercises in a fun and engaging way, which can include- sound matching, and rhyming words. Also, creating mental images, following directions, listening, shared reading, labeling, vocabulary, fine-motor skills, shapes, and positional words.
Rhyme and Draw activities can also provide a great springboard for writing.
