Have you ever given your students a rhyming sort to do during center time, only to realize it’s TOO CONFUSING because there are SO MANY PIECES to overwhelm them? Well, fear no more! This is JUST what you need!
• 15 sorting mats (What rhymes with: shoe, sky, ten, head, chip, nine, bow, comb, ball, hut, tree, cake, log, man, cat)
• 60 sorting pieces (shape and color-coded!)
• Lots of fun!
The difference between this sorting activity and any others I have seen is that the mats are color- AND shape-coded. If a child is trying to find the pieces that fit on the “What rhymes with sky?” mat, they’ll see that the ONLY picture shapes that will work are 1 each of a triangle, square, circle, and hexagon. Likewise, one 1 picture piece each of green, blue, orange, and pink will work, as well. My students are MUCH less overwhelmed by all the pieces when they know there are specific shapes and colors they’re looking for on each mat. Finally, rhyming during center time is FUN again! ☺
Print all pages on white construction paper or cardstock. I suggest laminating the pages for durability, as well. Then, cut out the 60 sorting pieces. Your game is ready to go!
I introduce this activity whole group to practice listening for the rhyming chunk in each word. With some repeated practice, it then becomes an ELA center. My kids LOVE working with REAL pictures and showing off their rhyming skills! Of course, you can always differentiate and put out less mats/pieces if you have beginning or struggling students.
