Being able to identify rhymes in language is a key skill of phonological awareness. Teachers and parents can help young students develop the ability to recognize rhymes by reading rhyming books and playing word games. Teachers of young students can reinforce rhyming skills by setting up and teaching new phonemic awareness activities.
The matching/memory game in this file will help motivate young students to identify words that rhyme. Each card contains a word/picture that rhymes with another word/picture card in the deck. *If you have students who are just learning to rhyme, you may opt to scaffold students' success by using the second version of the deck (also included). In this deck version, each rhyming pair of cards contains the same small shape in the lower right corner of each card.
This file gives you access to 21 matching rhyming word pairs (one set with supporting shape icons and one set without), for a total of 42 playing cards. As part of a bonus game variation called Multi-Player Card Draw, this file also contains six special cards which instruct players to a) skip a turn, b) take an extra turn, OR c) create and say a bonus pair of rhyming words.
Additionally, this file contains a page explaining the rules and game play variations. Don't forget: If you want to adjust the size of the playing cards, select printer options such as scale and "fit to page." I recommend that you print these on card stock and laminate them before you cut them out.
