Rhythm Envelope Game: This game is perfect for practicing isolated rhythms. It can be used soon after students learn a rhythm or later as a review.
- aural listening skills
- rhythm identification
- differentiation between similar rhythms
- associating how a rhythm looks with how a rhythm sounds
- assessing student understanding of rhythms
If you’re not familiar with this game, it’s very simple to teach. Each student gets an envelope with 8 rhythm cards. Teacher counts, claps or plays one of the 8 rhythms. Students individually identify which card was performed. Once all students have found the correct card, the class counts the rhythm together. This is a wonderful way to approach rhythm in a different way from the normal – see it, then count it. In this game, the students hear it, then see it, then count it.
DETAILED instructions are (with pictures) included along with a number of ways to SIMPLIFY the game and a number of ways to make it more CHALLENGING.
