This activity can be done in groups or with each student organizing their own rhythm patterns. Students are given a paper doll (both male and female options) and sets of clothing. They have to dress the doll from head to toe (hat, shirt, pants, shoes). Each article of clothing has a one beat pattern of rhythm. When the doll is dressed, the students need to perform the rhythm pattern from top to bottom. They may chant it, clap it, use recorders, use unpitched percussion. The possibilities are endless. The students can then interchange articles of clothing and mix up their rhythm pattern, performing their new ensemble. Quarter notes, double eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and quarter rests are used.
Enjoy this fun tool that provides a great framework to practice and compose rhythms.
