The object of this activity is to have students construct simple 2 beat rhythm patterns by finding matching/like puzzles pieces that share picture icons and the other half of its missing word parts. Each puzzle piece has a picture icon on it, part of the word/syllables (1st or 2nd half of word) that represent that picture icon, and the rhythm notation that matches the syllables on that puzzle piece. Once the two puzzle piece mates are put together, have students clap/perform the rhythm patterns that are created by their pieces using body percussion or real classroom instruments. For best results and to extend the life of the puzzle game pieces, glue puzzle pieces onto tag board or card stock, laminate, and then cut out. This activity would be great as a supplement in music room centers/stations, in a file folder game, or can also be used as a small group activity. Directions for use are included in the purchase.
