I created this template to be used for spelling and/or vocabulary learning. I use this with my 5th grade students and they love it! It provides several modalities of learning (visual, mathematical, musical). I was surprised by how positively my students responded to this activity. It could be used in any classroom, but it ideal for K-6th. Once they have mastered the rhythms, we add in the letters. Some days, we switch up how we perform the rhythms (snaps, hand claps, finger drums, etc).
After introducing this, all 18 of my students scored 75% or higher (which had been lower before). After three weeks, we did one week without, and 3 of my students scored a 55%. I include vocabulary words into spelling which provides them with more exposure to those words across the curriculum. You can even add voice recordings for your students to listen to you pronounce the words (I have students lead this now because they are familiar with it). Generally, we spend 15 minutes of spelling time each day going through the words. The first two days, we get through half of the list each day and review the harder words on the third day. I draw sticks and that student reads the word, the definition, and claps the rhythm for the class before we do it all together.
Addressing the Common Core Standards, having your students lead this activity will help to improve speaking skills while also improving language skills for ESL students.
Enjoy and have a wonderful day!
