Description
Improve rhythmic success & confidence! Flip the traditional teaching process with this hands-on rhythmic dictation game. This middle school rhythm activity is perfect for band, orchestra, choir, general music or upper elementary. Empower your musicians by developing rhythm dictation in an intentional way that leads to understanding!

This game is so easy to guide students through! Each student gets an envelope with 8 rhythm cards. Teacher counts, claps or plays one of the 8 rhythms. Students individually identify which card was performed. Once all students have found the correct card, the class counts the rhythm together. This is a wonderful way to approach rhythm in a new pedagogical way – hear it, see it, then count it. Sometimes these games are also known as "Post Office" games for elementary if the cards are kept in envelopes and "delivered" to each student to search through their 'mail' for the right card.
DETAILED instructions (with pictures) are included along with a number of ways to SIMPLIFY the game and a number of ways to make it more CHALLENGING.
Volume 1 includes SEVEN individual sets:
Set 1 Focus – quarter notes/rests
Set 2 Focus – half notes/rests
Set 3 Focus – whole notes/rests, beamed eighth notes
Set 4 Focus – dotted half notes/rests
Set 5 Focus – single eighth notes/rests
Set 6 Reviews all previous rhythms in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and common time
Set 7 Reviews all previous rhythms in 2 measure challenge chunks
EACH SET includes 8 practice flashcards with the 8 rhythms (about 3’ x 10” each) to practice the rhythms before the game as well as the 8 cards (about 1”x3” each) to cut into student sets. You can also use these large flashcards for other classroom games! (See the instructions included in the resource.)
