Finding the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is a vital skill for students when working with fractions. It is also one of the most commonly confused skills. Once students move on to other skills such as finding the Least Common Multiple, they get confused about how to find the GCF.
Whether teaching or reviewing GCF for end of year testing, this activity will be a fun way to practice that skill.
In this activity, students will work with a partner. Each person will have their own pairs of numbers that they will use to find the GCF. One student will be solving problems to figure out the question (the riddle) and the other will be solving to find the answer to the riddle. Using their answers and the chart, they will fill in the letters revealing the riddle and the answer.
Students will have fun working together to solve this puzzle.
This activity can be used as a wrap up to a lesson, a review or independent work. It would be great in a math center as well.
