In preparing students for state testing, I realized that there just aren't enough challenging, multi-step percent questions out there for students to practice. I created this station activity, using a fun riddle, to make sure students had to use critical thinking skills to answer percent problems. Also, there are problems that require prerequisite knowledge and skills, such as proportional relationships and expressions/equations.
The questions are designed for 7th grade Common Core Math. My students took 2 one hour long periods to complete the activity. I used this with my accelerated, regular, and inclusion 7th grade classes. My regular education and inclusion classes need more assistance working through the problems. I differentiated by including scaffolded notes that can be put on post-it notes and attached to each station. A detailed answer key, including all steps for solving the problems, is included. Since the station answers coordinate to a riddle answer, it is easy for a teacher to formatively assess students while circulating the room.
