Guided Reading resource by Megan Kirkpatrick
Teachers reading "Riding Freedom" by Pam Munoz Ryan can use this document as a work journal for students. It provides focused critical thinking questions for each set of chapters, a schedule to personalize for reading due dates and group meetings, and "tag" sentence starters. The journal provides an excellent foundation for guided reading meetings and discussions. It also helps teachers analyze their students' comprehension of the story in order to fill in the gaps.
For teachers unfamiliar with "tags" while reading, tagging are simply a term that embodies the process of students using reading strategies to comment and reflect on the book and their reading experiences. The "tag" starters are provided to help students begin their sentences in a focused manner in order to demonstrate thinking while reading.
