Centers are the perfect way to practice rigid transformations.
In this pack are six differentiated centers for students to practice translations, reflections, and rotations on the coordinate plane and onto a shape itself.
In the first three centers, designated as “Green,” students practice basic transformation skills. Center 1 asks students to describe transformations shown given a list of choices. Center 2 asks students to draw basic two-step transformations. Center 3 asks students to decide if statements about symmetry and rotating polygons onto themselves are true or false.
In the next three centers, designated as “Blue,” students practice more advanced transformation skills. Center 4 asks students to draw the preimage when given images and transformations. Center 5 asks students to construct two-step transformations, including reflecting over the line y=x. Center 6 asks students to identify lines of symmetry of polygons and calculate minimum degrees of rotation to carry polygons onto themselves.
The activity has recording sheets for students to use answering Centers 1-3 and Centers 4-6.
The differentiated centers allow the teacher to assign different students different levels of difficulty. Also, you could use the basic centers early in your transformations unit and the advanced centers later.
