This is a unit that includes vocabulary, plot questions, an activity, and a final quiz. This would be a good tool for a substitute, especially because it could be lengthened into multiple days.
First, read Rudyard Kipling's story and analyze and play with it along the way. I had my students think about and describe: pet ferret's, sleeping alongside their pets, dangerous snakes they have seen in zoos, fairytale elements, etc.
Next, introduce the vocabulary and worksheet. I allowed my students to work in partners.
Thirdly, review all of the correct answers as a whole. After that, play the Simon Says game.
Finally, quiz the students with the provided material.
Answer keys are provided.
