Many reading teachers have found value in helping students practice the common rimes, also known as word families. Although learning onset and rimes is not a substitute for explicit, systematic phonics instruction, practicing rimes is especially helpful for some beginning readers.
Here is a nice set of rimes flashcards, seven rimes games, and a whole class diagnostic rimes assessment with recording matrix. Designed by an MA reading specialist, these activities will jump start readers through analogous word parts.
