Meanwhile the older boys in the orphanage are joining the Hitler Youth.
This short section takes place between 1934 and 1936 as Hitler's Nazi party is spreading propaganda around the country about Jews.
Historical Context: Germany was held responsible for World War 1. They were forced to disarm their military and pay $30 billion in reparations. They were also forced to concede or give up a large portion of territory. These consequences forced Germany into a serious depression. Their money was worthless and their economy was in terrible shape. A fiery, passionate artist turned politician began to inspire the people of Germany. During the 1930s, he and his followers defined what a good German looked like and began to make the case that Germany would rebuild itself into a magnificent empire again.
