Looking for an interactive, student-centered way to help students understand the process of becoming a dictator? This simulation is for you! Working in groups of 3-4, students will choose one leader, one note-taker, and 1-2 campaign manager(s). Through a series of prompts and scenarios, students will try to get their leader to become the dictator of a (currently) democratic country.
Sound familiar? The sequence of events loosely mirrors the steps Hitler took to become a dictator in a democratic country (the Wiemar Republic). Through this process, students can recognize how a dictator takes power. Sure, students have fun and get silly, but at the end they have a deeper understanding of how Hitler was able to appeal to so many people in an economically depressed country.
The simulation takes about 25-30 minutes. I've included an editable PPT and non-editable PDF version of the simulation. There is no student worksheet included; however, students can easily number a binder sheet of paper and record their responses there.
After this lesson, I usually walk students through HOW Hitler became the Fuhrer of Germany. This part of the lesson is not included.
