Are you looking for ways incorporate content into the reading curriculum? If you have a research standard, use this project to help students understand the importance of geography and land forms in the development of the United States!
Here, students will choose (or be assigned) a major body of water in the U.S. Then, they will use the internet or available library books to answer the questions below.
After they complete their research, they will create an advertisement for their body of water. This can be a poster, video, or something of their choice.
A learning progression scale (rubric) is included with the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Recommended bodies of water for students to research:
• Mississippi River
• Missouri River
• Rio Grande
• Colorado River
• Ohio River
• Saint Lawrence River
• James River (Virginia)
• Lake Huron
• Lake Ontario
• Lake Michigan
• Lake Erie
• Lake Superior
• Gulf of Mexico
• Atlantic Ocean
• Pacific Ocean
These can also be adapted to fit the needs of your state standards (for example, in 4th grade Virginia history, students must learn about the James, Rappahannock, Potomac, and Shenandoah Rivers).
