Students will learn about trade and transportation on America’s inland waterways during the 1800s. This webquest focuses on the Erie Canal, Mississippi River, Ohio River and canal systems, and the Missouri River. Rivers and Canals 1800s: American Transportation Webquest uses a great website created by the Smithsonian. The website allows students to explore the ships, cargoes, cities, and industries that were connected by waterways during the 1800s. Check out the website at:
The webquest contains 50 questions and is a great way for students to learn more about the following topics:
• Erie Canal
• Ohio River and Canal Systems
• Mississippi River
• Missouri River
• Trade and Transportation
• Dangers Faced by Riverboats
An answer sheet is included for the teacher. The webquest takes most students 40 to 60 minutes to complete depending on the age of your students. Feel free to modify this activity if needed to fit the needs of your students. I highly suggest this webquest for students in grades 6-12.
