Rives in the United States: What is a River?, Rivers and People, Rivers and Landscape, Dams on Rivers, & The Mighty Mississippi.
Short, meaningful, and engaging nonfiction text is hard to find. I hope to have solved this problem with my mini units on multiple topics. These texts have been written on a fourth grade reading level and make students feel successful when reading about new historical concepts. I've had great feedback for these texts being used for high 2nd grade all the way to 5th grade. Each article has a multiple choice comprehension question, vocabulary block, a space to illustrate the new concept, and a once sentence summary statement. This packet also contains a one page written response questionnaire with paired text questions.
These short nonfiction texts work great for centers, morning work, homework, whole group, or small group work. I've also had great success with gluing these pages into our Social Studies journals. Students then have the chance to go back and reread information.
