Road sounds is a great phoneme segmentation activity. Phoneme segmentation is a technique for building phonemic awareness in which students break words into sounds- - saying each sound separately as they stretch out the word. For example the teacher asks, “How many sounds are there in the word cat?” The students says, “/c/ /a/ /t/ ... 3 sounds.”
While using Road Sounds the teacher dictates the word and the students drive their car as they state each sound within the word. After practicing in a small group setting this would be a great Literacy Center activity. This activity is to be used with actual toy cars which you can purchase at the dollar store.
There are two roads provided -- one solid road and one split road for students who still need to see the parts of the word.
