The Road to Reading is a five-step program for prevention and remediation of reading difficulties. Step 5 includes applying phonetic skills learned during earlier steps in the lesson through the spelling of words in isolation as well as in a dictated sentence.
This product contains everything needed to easily set up individual student notebooks, specifically the cover and ready-to-use notebook pages, for use during Step 5 of the daily Road to Reading lesson. I have found that early learners perform better with a pre-set format as opposed to using plain paper. The dictation notebook format includes:
1. A line for writing the date: This provides an informal way of monitoring and documenting a child's daily spelling progress.
2. Column heading boxes: The teacher will tell the students what vowels will be included in that day's lesson. The lesson can include 1, 2, or 3 different vowels, depending on the lesson. The student will write these in the column heading boxes.
3. Lines under each heading for the dictated words: Students will listen to the dictated word, decide which vowel it belongs under, and use their sound knowledge in order to correctly spell the word in the appropriate column.
4. Lines for the dictated sentence: A short sentence containing words with the same phonetic pattern will be dictated by the teacher and written by the student.
The book, Road to Reading, explains this process in detail. This template is meant to be a quick and easy resource for you to implement Step 5 in the daily lessons prescribed by Road to Reading.
