PERSONAL NOTE: I used this lesson several times in my 6th grade class - it is VERY easy to scaffold for different bells. I was observed during this bell, as well as had several novice teachers guest-observe to watch the student engagement!
This lesson walks students through the different events that happened which ultimately leads to secession. In this 90 min lesson, students will:
1. Watch video clips from "America-Story of Us: Division" episode, in which students determine the cause/effect of different events, including the Fugitive Slave Act and John Brown's Raid.
2. Complete cloze notes (key included) about Abraham Lincoln, his secession, and reasons why Southern states decide to secede.
3. Examine 2 primary resources - South Carolina secession poster and Northern cartoon depicting Southern states "running" off a cliff. Students will answer questions related to the primary sources.
4. Exit Ticket - Students have to place events leading to secession in chronological order and answer several multiple choice questions.
