This is a 141 page triple unit study on the texts The Twits, The Magic Finger, and Esio Trot. For each text, there is one before reading activity. Each chapter has comprehension questions, including at least one short response question (with evidence statements sentence starters at the bottom of the page), comic strip drawings, vocabulary analysis, visualizing, or summarizing.
There are 7 extended response questions for Esio Trot, 8 for The Magic Finger, and 4 extended response questions for The Twits.
I included a variety of character study questions and tables to utilize either during reading, or as a concluding activity for either text. There are also 3 art connection questions for each text and 7 journaling pages to use with any chapter. They can be used for many different texts. The 7 journaling pages include:
- Summarizing (Somebody Wanted But So)
- Story Elements
- Sequence Words
- Character Traits
I also included NYS test prep posters that we reference while reading the text including:
- Main Idea
- Context Clues
- Text Features
- Text Structure
There is also a list of suggestions for other extension activities to go along with any novel.
This unit has a variety of questions and activities in order to make differentiation easier. I use it in my fourth grade classroom, which ranges from levels H to Y. We read it outloud and students worked on questions independently. The student novel study packets were all differentiated, according to text level.
