What motivates upper elementary and middle school kids? I asked my ten-year old son what would inspire him to read. He told me biographies! I see my students reading the "Who was..." and "Who is..." series all the time. Why not have close reads for the classroom of famous children's book authors? Why not indeed! Roald Dahl was the author of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "The BFG", and "Matilda" just to name a few.
