★ POWERPOINT (Video preview available on the resource page)
Get three lessons in one PowerPoint! Introduce early English colonies with this 47-slide Powerpoint. Beginning with background on English exploration of the Americas, the presentation goes on to include three more sections:
★ The Mystery of Roanoke;
★ Success at Jamestown (including the legend of Pocahontas and John Smith); and
★ The Founding of the Plymouth Colony.
Each section includes information about the location, the colony's purpose, its leadership, and the fate of the colony, as well as an introduction to the American Indians who lived in the area at the time and the relationships between them and the English settlers.
Images (including my personal photos from 2 of the 3 sites) help students to envision the people, places, and events then and now. Vocabulary terms are underlined and defined. Each section includes a title slide, which creates natural stopping and starting points for using the PowerPoint over multiple class periods. Transitions and animations are included.
