This activity can be introduced in a US History class as part of the unit on the Roaring 20s to analyze the different opinions regarding the changing values of the time.

This debate activity will allow students to analyze and discuss how modernists and traditionalists would disagree about the following issues:
o City life
o The youth in America
o Prohibition
o The theory of evolution
o Women’s suffrage
o The use of credit
o Speculation

There are a number of different ways you can implement the activity. You can assign positions and topics in advance, you can have students work in groups to look at all of the topics in a jigsaw format, or you can have students individually research each topic. On the day of the debate, you can use the task cards to assign the topics at random if you didn’t assign them in advance.
