Introduce the 1920s with one of the first gender-bending Hollywood movies starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe -- *Some Like It Hot.* Familiarize your students with allusions to the pop culture, music, and slang of the period with a classic movie they probably wouldn't watch on their own.
Pop Up Video Directions: Randomly pass out the 19 pre-printed note cards to the students. While the movie *Some Like It Hot* is playing, be prepared to pause whenever one of the 19 topics is mentioned or seen. At that time, the student who has the note card covering the topic "pops up" and reads it to the class. Resume watching the video. Pay attention, some of the topics come fast and furious during the first 20 minutes of the movie.
Some of the allusions:
+ Dog Races
+ Rudolph Valentino
+ Mary Pickford
+ Marcel Curling Irons
+ Stock Market Crash
If you do not have the DVD, the movie is available on YouTube and Amazon Prime.
