Students explore how men such as Rockefeller and Carnegie formed monopolies during the Gilded Age. Provides context for terms such as vertical and horizontal integration, laissez faire, social darwinism, monopolies, trusts, etc. Students analyze primary source quotes and political cartoons, complete a Venn Diagram, create visuals to demonstrate understanding, answer questions, and create their own political cartoon.
Before using this I suggest using my "Robber Barons: Meet Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt & Their Monopolies" as an introduction to the famous monopolists and the time period.
After using this I suggest diving into a brief DBQ allowing students to voice their opinions on these men and their practices with my "Robber Barons or Captains of Industry? DBQ on Rockefeller, Carnegie & Monopolies".
