This is a perfect introduction to the "Gilded Age" of monopolies and "Robber Barons" such as Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. Students are provided context concerning the time period and monopolies before analyzing short but detailed and interesting biographies of 4 of the original monopolists: Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, and Vanderbilt. Students are asked to explain how each formed their monopoly and to identify something admirable and shameful about each individual before responding to a discussion question with their opinion.
After this introduction, I highly suggest using my "Robber Baron or Captain of Industry? DBQ on Rockefeller, Carnegie & Monopolies" if you would like to tackle more about how to perceive these men after the class discussion, or my "Robber Baron / Captain of Industry Tactics: How to Form a Monopoly" if you want to explore more about their infamous business practices.
