This activity is a quick and easy way for students to research the industrial tycoons of the 19th century and answer the question - Were they captains of industry or robber barons? The webquest is designed for students to work in groups of four (could be modified for groups of two) . Students first need to complete the individual worksheet and use three websites to research one of the four main industrialists of the 19th century (Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Morgan). They are given several questions to answer to ensure they have enough information to provide to their group members. Once they have completed their portion of the webquest, they are to share out with group members and complete the group worksheet. After researching each tycoon, they need to demonstrate their understanding by writing a one paragraph response - Were they captains of industry or robber barons?
This activity usually lasts two class period. One day is spent researching, the other is spent sharing out information as a group/class.
