This primary source analysis activity is great for students to gain understanding of Civil War general Robert E. Lee's views on slavery and why he chose to lead the Confederate army. It includes both printable and Google Docs versions
of the activity in this one download!
The download includes a 1-page primary source letter Robert E. Lee wrote in which he discusses his views on slavery. The letter has been slightly edited (just for spelling, capitalization, and grammar) to make it a little easier for students to fully understand.
Following the 1-page reading is a set of analysis questions for students to answer. These include opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of Lee's views and provide their own arguments about them.
An answer key is included for your convenience as well as a link to the Google Docs versions. The Google version is perfect if you're in a paperless classroom or just want to make it an online activity!
This resource can also be downloaded as part of the Civil War and Reconstruction Complete Unit Bundle
with 50+ resources to teach about this era!
