This activity was designed to be a multi-day warm-up, but can be used as a stand-alone activity, as well. Students read an excerpt from Robert E. Lee's letter to his sister, regarding his decision to remain in or resign from the United States Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. Students are then asked to identify the author, audience, time, place, meaning, and purpose of the document. They are also required to define a word in context and respond to two short-answer prompts. Rubric for writing prompts is included.
