This is a research-based reader’s theater, a Black History Montth celebration-lesson about a little known patriot, Robert Smalls. He masterminded during the Civil War a plan to contribute to the war effort by his successful delivery of the ship, Planter, to the Union navy and win freedom for his family and others. This reader’s theater enables students to learn an important aspect of Black History and participate through oral reading in an adventure on sea. The script provides an opportunity to gain an appreciation of the courage, faith and determination of African Americans to serve America despite the obstacles of slavery, war and stereotypes. Written to involve the entire class in an exciting escapade on sea. The package includes script and a resource package: vocabulary, a writing task and extension activities based on ships of the Civil War. STEM principles are utilized incorporating essential questions as students analyze and draw conclusions about the technology developed during the Civil War and its impact on naval warfare.
