This game is designed to give preschool/elementary students practice in sorting items into categories. Each of the category item cards contains a picture, so reading skills are not necessary for the students to be able to utilize this activity. There are a total of 21 categories, with 78 individual items that may be sorted into the categories. Categories include fruits, vegetables, types of weather, clothing, furniture, zoo animals, drinks, and school supplies.
Cut out and (if desired) laminate all of the stimulus cards. Sort the cards into category label cards and stimulus picture cards. Place all of the category label cards out on a flat surface. Have your student(s) take one card a time to sort into the appropriate category. To increase the difficulty level, remove the category label cards, and have the student(s) put similar cards in piles, and have him/her tell you why they go together.
This activity addresses the ELA CCSS for both kindergarten and first grade with L.K.5a and L.1.5a.
