Lesson 1- Intro to Rocks, kids activate background knowledge and put together and read a mini book about rocks
Lesson 2- Rockin' the Vocab, students view a colorful Power Point presentation about rock vocabulary and complete a variety of activities on a note sheet. (includes vocab posters)
Lesson 3- Recipe for a Rock, students view a Power Point about how the three types of rocks are formed, then they complete a rock cook book with the information they have learned (includes posters about the three kinds of rocks)
Lesson 4- Take a Closer Look, students view a Power Point presentation about characteristics of rocks, they make observations about the characteristics they see in rocks using a table (includes posters about rock characteristics)
Lesson 5- Junior Geologists, students make observations and notes about real rocks and use what they have learned in previous lessons to make their best guess about the type of rock they are looking at.
Lesson 6- Investigation, students use real rocks or the included rock cards and investigate different ways they can sort rocks by their characteristics.
Lesson 7- Changing the World, students view Power Point slides about how erosion and weathering change the face of the planet, they complete a sorting activity about Earth changes that happen quickly and changes that happen slowly.
Lesson 8- Secret Life of Rocks, students view a Power Point about the rock cycle, they complete a note sheet about how the rock characters from the Power Point change over time.
Review and Assessment - a 2-page review and 2-page assessment are provided which cover the main concepts from the unit.
