Our Rock Categories sheet will give students practice matching rock names to their categories (igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary). Using our illustration of a dry creek or stream bed, students will color each named rock shape the correct color depending on the category to which it belongs.
We have included a list of thirty-two rock names and their categories in an answer key and a color key so students may check themselves.
Igneous Rocks (brown) - basalt, granite, diorite, obsidian, peridotite, pumice, rhyolite, tuff, scoria, porphyry
Metamorphic Rocks (gray) - gneiss, marble, phyllite, quartzite, schist, slate, soapstone, hornfels, anthracite, amphibolite, novaculite
Sedimentary Rocks (pink) - breccia, coal, flint, limestone, sandstone, shale, dolomite, travertine, conglomerate, arkose, oil shale
