The lesson plan was originally written to correspond with Pearson Science curriculum for grade 6, however, it could be adapted to work with any curriculum featuring the rock cycle and includes directions for teaching the activity.
Students move through stations (volcano, mantle, desert canyon, etc.) and roll dice to determine their fate as a piece of sediment in the rock cycle. They use a scorecard to record their journey. Students then use the scorecard to write a narrative essay about what they experienced on their individual journey. They are encouraged to add sensory and scientific details along with transitions to make their journey factually accurate and more entertaining.
A project explanation sheet is provided for students along with the rubric for grading the writing portion.
