While this project seems simple on the surface, it actually requires students to use many different skills and apply diverse knowledge. Students use technology skills, organizational skills, writing skills, creativity, imagination, and science content knowledge about rocks. In addition, they must apply these skills in an unfamiliar context: writing for a younger audience. Not only do students review and reinforce their personal knowledge about the rock cycle, but they also provide a creative introduction to the study of rocks for elementary children (grades 2-4). You will be amazed at the quality products that result! This 16-page packet includes notes for the teacher, a detailed project assignment sheet, a student learning contract, a project checklist, several organizational handouts (Rock Cycle Information Sheet, Rock Cycle Diagram, Storybook Plan, PowerPoint Plan), a Project Final Evaluation Rubric, and a basic timeline for the teacher. Students write a storybook, create a PowerPoint slide show that they present to their peers, and create a printed storybook. As a final activity, they have the option of reading their storybook to the children who were their intended audience.
