This fun and engaging activities allows your students to become geologists as they hunt for rocks outside and classify them in the classroom. Students spend 10-15 minutes collecting 7 rocks on your school campus. When they return to the classroom, they will fill out the chart classifying their grain size, color, texture and even mass, volume and density. When finished, they will partner up and classify their rocks into 2, 3 and 4 different groups before answering the analysis questions. Best suited for a 45 minute - 1 hr class. Enjoy as your kids explore rocks.
Extension: you may ask students how they believe the rocks they found ended up on our campy. Pick one rock and write a short story of the rocks journey to your school's campus.
