We used this as our introduction to the unit: Rocks & Minerals
Students brought in a rock to share with the class. The rocks were mixed together in a pile, and students choose one rock to observe.
My rock looks like....
My rock feels like...
My rock smells like...
After making observations students write a few senteces on where they think their rock came from (make an inference!).
Finally, students use crayons and colored pencils to illustrate the rock they choose. Encourage them to be as life-like as they can be! Use different colors to shade and blend colors.
