Product Description
This rock foldable note is a perfect introduction to a rock cycle unit where you teach students how to observe specific rocks. If you don't have rocks to observe, print off the detailed photos found in my Rock Cycle Bulletin Board POSTER SET. The rock names are included: shale, conglomerate, sandstone, limestone, granite, pumice, obsidian, basalt, gneiss, schist, and marble. If you want to include different rocks (or minerals) I have included an unlabeled version for your convenience. Although this correlates to Utah’s Core, this doesn’t have to be only for Utah. This follows a unit on the rock cycle and is part of my Rock Cycle, Minerals, and Soil Science and Literacy Complete Unit BUNDLE.

Providing a hand lens, magnifier, or jeweler loupe available per student is best. Copy foldable back-to-back, and pass out one per student. Spend at least 30 seconds just observing one rock before sketching begins. Explain that good scientists notice every tiny detail, so students should not be finished very early. Use color pencils or crayons if needed or grayscale with a pencil. Then, after each rotation decide if the rock is sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous and EXPLAIN WHY. Have students write a short note what they observe on each rock, what category the rock is, and write why.

This compliments the really effective chants in my Rock Cycle Bulletin Board POSTER SET, and if you review the quick chants regularly your students will memorize the lists of rocks on this sheet.
