This is always one of my students' favorite activities of the entire year. It is a poetry writing activity that could be used as an introduction to a poetry unit, a creative writing unit, or as an object lesson about the power of getting to know your subject/topic. Full lesson plan, assignment handouts, and student examples included. Students are assigned to find and bring a rock. Over the course of the next few days, students "bond" with their rocks by answering questions in their journal about the rocks. A sample of the first journal entry is included on the free preview. After students have "bonded" with their rock they find out the assignment, which is to create a poem about their rock. The students also learn about the "Rock Miracles." The first is how good the poem is because the students know the subject so well. The second miracle is how easy it is to write the poems because they know the subject so well. These are great lessons that can be transferred to any writing activity throughout the year. My students create some really great poetry and love reading the poetry of their peers!
