Need to get your students out of your hair and classroom for a bit? Why not try out the Rock Type Scavenger Hunt and go outside! It works whether you've taught the rock types or not.
In this lab, students explore their school grounds looking for rock samples. They observe each one, conduct research on igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, and apply what they learned to identifying the rocks they found. Students will then write a hypothesis about what this means about the geologic past of their area... or realize that humans move a lot of rocks around!
