This group project is a jigsaw project. A jigsaw project involves breaking the students up into small groups (2 or 3 students per group). Each group is assigned a rock type (igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic) to research using their textbooks, the internet and any other materials that might be available to them. Once their research is complete, the students create a poster and develop a presentation. Small groups are then put together so that each larger group consists of an igneous group, a sedimentary group and a metamorphic group. The students then present their research in this group setting.
Included is a project description for the students, a grading rubric and student worksheets.
I found that this group project worked well as an introduction to the rock unit. Students liked working in small groups and teaching one another. They also liked becoming an expert an a specific group of rocks.
