This 9 page pdf is made up of 9 different photos that take up most of an 8.5 x 11 inch paper. I took these pictures while vacationing in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Each page has a question that gets students to think or begins a small group or whole class conversation about the smoothness of rocks, weathering, the breaking down of large rocks, layers of boulders, and the coloring of large rock formations.
I print these off in color and laminate them. Then I arrange them on my bulletin board and have students look at them and talk to each other about possible answers to the questions. Then, I use these images in my teaching of the Pebbles, Sand, and Silt unit.
A reading teacher at my school thought that these would make a nice book. You could laminate them and bind them, giving small groups of students an opportunity to talk and wonder about the big ideas included here.
Perhaps, you will think of other great ways to use these!
