The booklet contains templates which are photocopied and passed out to each student in a series of lessons which cover five topics on the subject of Geology.
These hand outs are cut, folded, and color-coded as the cognitive material of each lesson is presented.
The teacher makes available little splitters of the various rocks needed to construct a foldable Rock and Mineral Chart.
Each student creates a display of the taxonomy in a graphic which divides the rocks and minerals according to their Geological nomenclature.
The teacher finds samples of a few of the rocks listed on the one sheet of paper called the Rock Collection.
By wrapping each rock in a towel and striking it with a hammer, small splinters are made available to the students.
Working from their desks, they are allowed to come to a display table which the teacher has set up. On that table are the splinters of various rock samples, each one properly identified.
The students can use forceps or fingers to select one splinter at a time, carry it back to their seat, and glue it in the appropriate space.
The students are encourage to save their Lotus Leaf Notebook of Geology, one page of which is inside exhibiting the Rock and Mineral Display.
The focus is on Rock Classification, but the 10 lessons span a dozen classroom sessions which teach the student about crystals, geology, atomic lattice, and more. The culmination to the series of lessons is the construction of a notebook which is 3-D, and opens up like a lotus flower, one flap at a time. The content is organized in the same graphic design as are all the other KOFH educational products, but there is one page which organizes the three types of mineral/rocks into groups that display small particles of the actual rock, itself.
