It can be a challenge to teach students to make quality observations when studying rocks and minerals. This guide supports students as they learn to make quality observations of rocks and minerals using four common categories: transparency, texture, luster, and color. This one page guide lists the four categories, defines transparency, texture, and luster, and provides students with some sample answers they can use to help them get started with their observations.
This guide is meant to be used while students are doing labs or field work that require them to make observations about rocks and minerals. This lab does not list classifications for rocks and minerals, but the observations students make using this guide could be used to help them classify the rocks and minerals.
This download includes a black and white version and a color version for those teachers who have access to a color printer and/or want to project a more colorful version on the board.
